REGISTERED NURSE

SUMMARY

The Nurse coordinates medical, dental and vision services for youth in care.  The Nurse also maintains appropriate records and files pertaining to medical services. Supervises Transport Coordinator if applicable.

The Nurse is directly responsible to the Therapist II (Boys Ranch).

This position is eligible for overtime pay.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties and responsibilities are given as examples of the various types of work performed in this position.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Maintains the clinic and/or first aid on campus. Ensures that it is neat and clean and that supplies and equipment are adequate and inventoried regularly.
  2. Completes youth assessments on an initial and ongoing basis, including physical, dental, vision, hearing and other areas as appropriate.
  3. Arranges and/or coordinates services for medical, dental, vision and other needs of youth, including regularly scheduled, as well as emergency services.
  4. Sets up and maintains records and files relating to the clinic and medical services which includes administrative as well as youth files and records.
  5. Develops schedules and provides training and education for youth and staff in health and medical topics (CPR and first aid, OSHA, nutrition, and other health or medical related areas as assigned by supervisor).
  6. Consults with Youth Ranches staff on areas relating to youth’s medical needs and issues which includes consultation, training and monitoring of protocols for various treatments prescribed by the doctor as well as follow up on first aid.
  7. Assists Business Manager, Unit Secretary or Program Bookkeeper with Medicaid and other third party insurance eligibility, claims or billing matters (if applicable) including Medicaid enrollment and disenrollment.
  8. Maintains good public relations with the medical community and provides liaison between Youth Ranches and doctors, dentists, orthodontists, emergency rooms, pharmacies and other medical providers.
  9. Monitors the administration of prescription and over the counter medication by cottage parents, youth care assistants, program leaders or other staff responsible for direct care of youth. This includes monitoring medication logs and following up on prescribed treatments for youth in care, giving regular input to supervisors concerning direct care staff who do not follow protocol or prescribed treatment for youth in their care.
  10. Ensures the procurement and purchasing of items for areas of responsibility in accordance with agency purchasing policy and procedures.
  11. Obtains initial, and maintains all current medication consents.
  12. Transports prescriptions to and from pharmacies as needed.
  13. Schedules visits from Psychiatrist, assists during medication management sessions, and ensures all necessary documentation is obtained and/or completed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

The person filling this position must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program and currently licensed as a Registered Nurse with the State of Florida. Previous experience in the nursing field, particularly dealing with youth is preferred.

  4. Must have knowledge of medical equipment and its use.
  5. Must present an example of good health and hygienic practices.
  6. Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups.
  7. Must have the ability to calculate figures and amounts, such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, ability apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  8. Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; ability to interpret extensive variety of instructions; ability to deal with problems involving variety of situations.
  9. Must have a valid Florida Driver License and be able to maintain a safe driving record consistent with agency policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical requirements described are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform the essential functions.

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, listen, talk, use hands/fingers, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms and taste or smell. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is generally performed in an office environment.  Incumbent’s duties may cause exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

BASE SALARY

$20/hour.
