Mechanic (Part-time 24 Hours Per Week)

SUMMARY

The Mechanic is responsible for performing mechanical and preventative maintenance work on Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches vehicles and equipment.

The Mechanic is directly responsible to the Business Manager.

This position is eligible for overtime pay.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties and responsibilities are given as examples of the various types of work performed in this position.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Makes and assists in the repair and maintenance of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches fleet of vehicles and equipment including diagnosing, repairing, replacing parts, and at times building items.
  2. Assists in maintaining accurate and current records of each vehicle to ensure proper preventative maintenance is performed and vehicle is maintained in safe operating condition.
  3. Supervises the cleaning of tools, equipment, and shop area and immediate grounds area to ensure good housekeeping.
  4. Maintains all records, supplies, manifest insurances, leak detections for the fuel tanks, waste oil, filters and etc. per state requirements.
  5. Uses routine jobs to teach youth mechanical skills to enhance their learning experience.
  6. Maintains an adequate stock of common supplies for vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
  7. Must be available to make emergency out of town trips.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

The person filling this position must have a high school diploma or GED and two years training in Auto Mechanics.  Two years work experience in a related field is preferred.

  1. Must possess a working knowledge of various vehicles, equipment, tools and diagnostic equipment.
  2. Must have patience and the personality to work and communicate effectively with others.
  3. Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals, compute ratio, rate and percent.
  4. Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  5. Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, government regulations, write reports and business correspondence.
  6. Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, interpret extensive variety of instructions, and deal with problems involving a variety of situations.
  7. Must have the ability to acquire a CDL license.
  8. Must have a good understanding and knowledge of the English language in oral and written form.
  9. Must have the ability to acquire a Passenger endorsement.
  10. Must have the ability to effectively work with youth in the capacity of guidance and training.
  11. Must have a valid Florida Driver License and be able to maintain a safe driving record consistent with agency policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and use hands to finger, handle or feel.  The employee is regularly required to sit, talk or hear, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and reach with hands and arms.

The employee may occasionally lift and or move objects weighing more than 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to focus.  The employee must be able to hear and will be subjected to loud noises.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions for this job may include outdoor weather conditions, working near mechanical moving parts and exposure to fumes, airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electric shock.

BASE SALARY

$14.25 hourly
